Rebound Orthopedics & Neurosurgery Internist Thomas Reis, M.D., Retires
After providing exceptional care to the Portland-Vancouver area for more than 40 years, Thomas Reis, M.D. has retired from his role as internist at Rebound Orthopedics & Neurosurgery.
Referred to as one of the guiding lights of internal medicine in the region, Dr. Reis has dedicated his life and career to improving diagnosis and treatment, as well as community service. After graduating medical school at Creighton University, he completed his residency at Oregon Health & Science University. The board certified physician and American College of Physicians fellow worked at the Vancouver Clinic until 2011 and then practiced at Rebound Orthopedics & Neurosurgery in Portland until his retirement Wednesday, Aug. 3.
“He has always been available, always been understanding and has always provided exceptional advice and care. He has been a model of who a doctor should be. In an era when much of medicine has turned its back on the patient to face the keyboard, Dr. Reis has continued to provide the personal contact, availability, engagement and good humor that has made him beloved to his patients, staff and colleagues,” says Rebound orthopedic surgeon, Donald Roberts, M.D.
In addition to the respect he has garnered from his colleagues, Dr. Reis has received numerous accolades and awards throughout the course of his career for his excellence in internal medicine and leadership on the local, state and national level. His work as a local pioneer in the improvement of diagnosis and treatment of HIV/AIDS patients has been instrumental. As an active member of the hospital staff of Southwest Washington Medical Center, he ran the Morbidity and Mortality Conference for many years, and was repeatedly awarded for his work as Chairman of the Morbidity and Mortality Committee and the HIV/AIDS Task Force. From 1994-1998, Dr. Reis was Governor of the Washington Chapter ACP, and was awarded the prestigious ACP Laureate Award in 1999. The Clark County Medical Society presented him with the Good Citizen Award in 1988 and 1993. He was also the recipient of the Clark County Hall of Fame Award in 1988.
For for 22 years, Dr. Reis served as the team internist for the Portland Trail Blazers, treating illnesses and non-orthopedic issues. He was named the 2012-2013 National Basketball Athletic Trainers Association (NBATA) Physician of the Year, an annual award which recognizes a team physician for exceptional service and care for his/her respective team and visiting NBA teams, as well as the physician’s commitment to service in the community and NBATA charity organizations.
