New Team at Rose Garden
There's a new team in town, but you may not have heard about them on ESPN. That's probably because, even though this team is sports related, and is located at the Rose Garden it's not an athletic team. The new team is an orthopedic and sports medicine group called Rebound. Its team members are composed of an impressive array of healthcare practitioners dedicated to the needs of Portland's athletes. And whether the athlete is a multi-million dollar NBA star or a weekend warrior, they now have a new state-of-the-art facility available to them. Rebound is the culmination of two years of planning and is the direct result of the collaboration of people and organizations focused on the well being of athletes from all walks of life.

Starting Line-up Announced
All great teams have a starting line-up that provide the experience and leadership that is essential to the team's success. Among the key team members and primary architects of Rebound Orthopedics & Sports Medicine are Dr. Mark Colville, Dr. Don Roberts and Jay Jensen. Both Dr. Roberts and Dr. Colville are orthopedic surgeons with sub-specialties in sports medicine. Jay Jensen is a physical therapist and the trainer for the Portland Trail Blazers. Although these three professionals comprise the inspirational core of the new clinic, they all emphasize that this has been, and will continue to be, a group effort of many talented individuals without whom Rebound could not exist. Doctors Colville and Roberts are with Northwest Surgical Specialists, located in Vancouver, which is affiliated with Southwest Washington Medical Center. As Dr. Roberts pointed out during a tour of the new facility at the Rose Garden, "The support we have received from Southwest Washington Medical Center has been tremendous and greatly appreciated."

Dr. Don Roberts received his medical degree from Stanford University in 1980 and went on to complete his residency with Harvard Combined Orthopedic Residency. He obtained his fellowship in sports medicine in 1986 and began practice that same year. Considering Don's strong interest in sports medicine, when the chance to become team physician for the Portland Trail Blazers was presented he leaped at the opportunity, albeit not as high or far as the new patients he would be attending. His duties require him to attend home games during the regular season, and away games during playoffs and (dare we hope) championship series. Though his responsibilities with the Blazers require much of his time, the majority of his professional time is spent in his practice at Northwest Surgical Specialists and Rebound attending to the needs of less well known, but in his eyes equally important patients. His interest in sports is not limited to his professional life. He enjoys fishing and tennis in his off time. He is passionately committed to kayaking, and worked as a professional river guide when his crowded schedule permitted.

Dr. Mark Colville attended medical school at the University of Michigan graduating in 1980. He then went to Wayne State University where he did his residency in general surgery then orthopedic surgery from 1981 to 1985. He acquired his fellowship in sports medicine in 1986, starting his practice that same year. Like Don, Mark has a genuine affection for sports and athletics. His interest goes back to his boyhood, when he and his brothers were all competitive in sports. His father, also a physician, was very influential on his later decision to become a doctor. But it was an orthopedic surgeon, who was also an accomplished athlete, that would become his role model and inspiration to go into orthopedics. Dr. Colville has an impressive portfolio of sports teams with which he is associated. He is team physician for the Portland Winter Hawks and Portland State University. As if this were not enough to keep him busy, Mark maintains a full clinic and hospital schedule. His love of sports extends to his personal life where he keeps in shape in order to play ice hockey and ski race. One might suppose that ice hockey might be a bit of a challenge to a forty something athlete. But as Dr. Colville says, "It's surprisingly low impact, easy on the knees, and an excellent aerobic workout."

Jay Jensen, a licensed physical therapist, is the team trainer for the Portland Trail Blazers. As one of the catalysts for the formation of Rebound, he has played a key role in developing the multidisciplinary aspect of the clinic. By combining physical therapy and orthopedic medicine, the clinic provides the patient with a complete therapeutic package. Jay's role as the Blazers' trainer gives him a rather unique perspective of the role for proper physical conditioning. "The treatment the players (Blazers) get is the same kind of treatment and care that the people in the community will receive," he states when referring to the Rebound philosophy. With Jay's duties as Blazer trainer requiring so much of this time during the team's training season, Douglas Rosario, also a physical therapist, will be Rebound's director of physical therapy. Jay will be more readily available during the off season to play a "hands-on" role in patient care and the continued development of the physical therapy and conditioning programs of Rebound.

There are two other prominent physicians of the Rebound staff that deserve special recognition for their contributions as well. Dr. Tom Reis, who is the Blazers' internist, and Dr. Mike Markham, a neurosurgeon and former OSU basketball player, are distinguished team members at Rebound. Both of these talented doctors have extensive sports medicine experience and their reputations significantly enhance the clinic's stature.

The Game Plan
Rebound Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, is the direct result of the planning and combined expertise of the aforementioned healthcare professionals. However, it is important to note that Rebound was designed from its conception to be a collaborative effort. Not only does the new clinic draw on its founders and organizations with which they are associated, but ultimately from the Portland medical community as a whole. Relationships have been established with medical professionals from other practices among which include specialists in neurosurgery, internal medicine, orthopedic surgery, and physical therapy. Of the affiliations that Rebound is particularly proud is the one with the physicians at Orthopedics Northwest whose doctors will also be available at the Rose Garden facility. There will be an ongoing effort to expand the number and scope of affiliations to create a truly multidisciplinary and cooperative approach to patient care.

The scheduled hours for weekday operations of 7 am to 7 pm will provide a level of convenience and access to those who may require to be seen on a walk-in basis. This will, for example, allow an injured high school athlete to be seen by a sports medicine professional much more quickly than is often the case. The extended hours will also appeal to the recreational athlete by giving them the flexibility to schedule around their own working hours. Additionally, a 24 hour Sports Injury Hotline has been established and can be reached by dialing REBOUND (732-6863) in the 503 area code, or 1-800-REBOUND outside of the local calling area. This service will allow patients, as well as physicians to receive timely responses to their inquires.

The primary goal is to provide the patient and medical community a centralized source for sports medicine related issues, and a resource that will promote an atmosphere of cooperation designed for the mutual benefit of patient and healthcare practitioner alike. As Dr. Roberts expressed, "Our goal is to pull together the best talent in orthopedic, rehabilitation, and physical therapy and put it in one centrally located facility and provide the highest level of orthopedic and athletic care possible."

With that kind of spirit, dedication to patient well being, enthusiasm for sports and those who participate in them, Rebound has a winning game plan.
