Dr. Edward Coale wins 2008 R. L. Petzoldt Award and 2009 Best Paper, American Society of Hand Therapists

September 9, 2009 – Vancouver, WA – Rebound’s Dr. Edward H. Coale, Jr. won the R.L. Petzoldt Award at the Boston 2008 American Society of Hand Therapists annual meeting and Best Paper in the Scientific Session at the 2009 annual meeting of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) and the American Society of Hand Therapists (ASHT). Both awards were for his research done in collaboration with Julie Teal, Owner, Hand Therapy Specialists.

Dr. Coale won the 2008 R. L. Petzoldt Award for his paper, Functional Outcomes of Individuals with Carpometacarpal Arthritis Following Surgery.  The R. L. Petzoldt Award recognizes creativity and innovations in hand therapy.  The 2009 Best Paper was awarded his study, Entire Flexor Carpi Radialis Tendon Harvest for LRTI Alters Wrist Motion. He presented the paper at the 2009 ASSH/ASHT meeting in San Francisco. These awards are considered as among the highest honors awarded internationally for hand research.

Dr. Coale is an orthopedic surgeon at Rebound in Vancouver with a sub-specialty in hand and wrist surgery.  He began his practice at Rebound in 1992.  According to Dr. Coale, “This study was possible in large part because of our efficient practice management and synergistic culture at Rebound. We hope to collaborate with Hand Therapy Specialists on many projects in the future.”

“It is unusual for orthopedists to be able to conduct meaningful research in a private practice setting.” Dr. Coale added, “I’m especially pleased to be recognized for a study completed in this community.”
