Jim Chesnutt, M.D., is a sports medicine physician specializing in the evaluation and management of injuries in youth and athletes of all ages. Dr. Chesnutt is board-certified in Family Medicine and the specialty of Sports Medicine since 1997. His practice is focused exclusively on sports medicine and the non-operative care of fractures and musculoskeletal injuries, including concussions and ultrasound-guided evaluations and injections. Dr. Chesnutt is currently a team physician for the Portland Trail Blazers and previously for the Portland Timbers, Portland Beavers Baseball, and numerous high schools and universities around Portland. Over the last 20 years, Dr. Chesnutt has offered his professional expertise to improve health, fitness, and sports safety at the local, state, and national levels. His passion is to help you quickly and safely return to your sport or back to a healthy active lifestyle of walking, running, swimming, biking, skiing, or hiking across the Pacific Northwest.

Dr. Chesnutt has been working at OHSU for over 20 years where he has served as the founding Medical Director of the OHSU Sports Medicine Program and Medical Director of the OHSU March Wellness & Fitness Center. Beginning with his Portland Public High School alma mater, he developed high school sports medicine programs across the whole metro area that provided sports injury evaluation and treatment to students of all backgrounds, teaching students the value of healthy lifestyles and injury prevention. Additionally, Dr. Chesnutt serves as a medical advisor for the OSAA, is Co-Director of the Oregon Concussion Awareness and Management Program (OCAMP), and is an advisor to the Stanford Concussion and Brain Performance Center’s national concussion guidelines and education program. Dr. Chesnutt will continue his complex concussion clinic and research at OHSU Family Medicine part-time where he serves as an Associate Professor teaching primary care doctors in the OHSU Sports Medicine Fellowship Program.

Dr. Chesnutt is a SW Portland native, enjoys running along the Portland waterfront, playing the electric bass, and spending time with his family and friends exploring and playing in the Pacific Northwest.

Dr. Chesnutt is available to see athletes and active individuals with sports-related conditions related to the ankle, back, elbow, foot, hand, hip, knee, neck, shoulder, spine, and wrist needs in Portland at Rose Quarter as well as in Lake Oswego.
