Physical medicine and rehabilitation, otherwise known as physiatry, is a specialized branch of medicine focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of illnesses or injuries that affect a patient's musculoskeletal and nervous systems and how they move. Physiatrists are medical experts that specialize in a variety of nonsurgical techniques to treat patients' joint, ligament, or tendon pain and typically use electrodiagnostic studies (EMG and NCV) to evaluate for injury or disease of the muscles, nerve roots, and peripheral nerves.

Physical medicine and rehabilitation is a recognized medical specialty since 1946. Physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists, also called physiatrists, are trained in using minimally invasive procedures to treat musculoskeletal pain, injuries, and conditions of the nervous system/spine. Their approach combines conservative care as well as interventional techniques to relieve pain, improve function, and promote recovery without the need for surgery. Physiatrists use techniques such as spinal injections, facet ablations, joint injections, shockwave therapy, nerve blocks, and orthobiologic or regenerative techniques.

When Is It Time to Consult a Physiatrist?

You might want to consult a physiatrist, also known as a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician, if you experience any of the following:

  • Acute injuries/pain: After an injury (e.g., from a sports injury or accident), a physiatrist can help create a customized treatment plan to enhance your recovery and consider non-invasive procedures or regenerative techniques.
  • Chronic injuries/pain: A physiatrist can assist in developing a plan to improve your quality of life and reduce your pain so you can get back to the activities you enjoy.
  • Nonsurgical treatment options: If you are seeking options to avoid surgery, physiatrists can evaluate whether injections or orthobiologic techniques would aid in your nonsurgical management.
  • Muscle weakness: If you have muscle weakness of an unknown cause, physiatrists can help diagnose the source—whether neurologic or musculoskeletal. Electrodiagnostics (EMG/NCS) are often used to aid in the diagnosis and to grade the severity of your condition so a treatment plan can be developed to help you return to the life you love.

If you are experiencing any of these issues or are unsure about the cause of your symptoms, it might be time to see a physiatrist. They also work closely with orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons and know when to refer for surgical management.

Some of the common conditions treated by physiatrists include:
