My Comeback Story: Kirsten D.

Kirsten D.
MRSA infection

In May 20,019, I came in through the emergency room at Peacehealth and started being evaluated for left knee pain. After numerous tests and CAT scans, Dr. Edward Coale came in from Rebound orthopedics and introduced himself and proceeded to inform me that they had found over a half a liter of pass to my left lower leg also I had a serious MRSA infection that had crossed over into my bloodstream, making me septic. I was extremely sick. Dr Coale proceeded to let me know. I would be going to emergency major surgery and that if the infection had gotten into my bone, they were going to have to amputate from below my knee. Most patient would not probably appreciate his candor, but I did. I’m a nurse and I wanted to know exactly what I was dealing with and I appreciate Dr Coale so much that was the start of my adventure. I did not get out of the hospital until I was transferred to a rehab facility on July 4 while I was in the hospital during the whole month of June I went to surgery every other day the doctors did their best, but the infection was just not clearing. I literally begged them to not amputate because I was a floor, nurse and extremely active by hiking and swimming Laying out in the sun walking the beach and I just could not lose my leg. During all of the surgeries and awaiting a new knee replacement…. MRSA had eaten my knee cartilage, I slipped and fell and broke my right hip…. Requiring more surgery and watching for any new MRSA infections. I finally got my new knee…. Repaired by my most favorite physician, Dr Southerland. One year past that new knee infection, Dr Southerland had to take me back into the OR because the new knee…. Had a MRSA infection! Yes, this story is true. I am a walking miracle and I give all the credit to God and the entire WONDERFUL Rebound Group! They ALL saved me and I am eternally grateful and very blessed. I am back as a floor nurse part time and work happily for Peacehealth.
