When To See a Physical Therapist

Physical therapists are licensed to care for a variety of musculoskeletal problems, from chronic pain and overuse injuries to joint replacement rehabilitation. At Rebound Orthopedics & Neurosurgery, our team is experienced in treating pain and limitations in mobility, with the goal of facilitating a full and rapid recovery for each patient.

“We work closely with physicians to make sure our patients receive the best possible care,” says Rebound physical therapist, Mike Baer. “Through a combination of flexibility, strengthening, and range of motion exercises, as well as other traction and mobilization techniques, we help patients overcome dysfunction, prevent injury, and manage pain, so they can live life to the fullest.”

Reasons to see a physical therapist:
  • Changes in mobility – If you’re seeing the signs of decreased mobility (which can be common as you age) such as difficulty walking, lifting, or standing, a physical therapist can help you improve your flexibility and strength through conditioning and stretching exercises.
  • Chronic pain – Traction, a type of decompression therapy, may help patients who suffer from lower back pain and neck pain by increasing spinal mobility, creating space between joints and discs, and alleviating pressure on nerves.
  • Sports specific rehabilitation – Athletes and active individuals of all types look to physical therapists for injury prevention and rehabilitation. Whether you’re suffering from one of these common running injuries or these common causes of shoulder pain, a therapist can equip you with a personalized plan to help heal your injury, restore movement, and alleviate pain. Our team of therapists offers sports rehab for cycling, throwing athletes, running, aging athletes, and swimming, as well as a neuro-muscular proprioceptive plyometric program for ACL injury prevention and rehab.
  • To recover from an injury – Exercises designed to condition, improve strength, and increase flexibility and range of motion, as well as passive therapies that involve a therapist applying stress to a patient’s muscles and joints, can aid in recovery.
  • Preventing surgery – Physical therapy may be used as an alternative to surgical procedures in some instances, depending on the severity of the condition or injury. Your physician may recommend physical therapy as an initial step in your treatment process.
  • After a procedure – Attending regular sessions after surgery can be an essential part of your recuperation. PTs help post-surgical patients restore normal motion, strength, activity and function. After procedures like hip or knee replacement, therapy will help you strengthen the muscles surrounding the joint, avoid excessive stiffness, and regain balance.
  • Injury prevention – While most of us think to seek medical attention after something has gone wrong, physical therapy can also be proactive.
  • Learn ways to age healthily – Joint mobilization and strengthening techniques can help with common age-related concerns, such as balance, mobility, pain, bone loss and osteoarthritis. Physical therapy can help increase bone strength, reduce bone loss, and help you avoid frailty, keeping you active and healthy as you age.
